Rat Pack Party at THE FARM

A few miles south of Lacona on the road to Richland there existed Sharon's place, "The Farm", complete with a big barn and livestock. The place was pretty much old and rundown. From time to time there'd be a party for no better reason than to have some more fun.

One Halloween they had a big beer bust - 3 kegs of Genny and all the munchies you could eat. We cranked up the 8-track tape player and blasted out all the best music of the day: Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Led Zeppelin, Kansas, Eagles, Cat Stevens, Lynard Skynard, Grateful Dead, and many others. Some wore costumes, some didn’t have to. I don’t remember much of that party, but I know it was FUN! I think there was fireworks later, or maybe it was just shotgun competition again.

In the early fall of ‘74 Mark (aka GOOSE) Liszewski’s older sister, Marianne, organized a wonderful old-fashioned box-lunch party. Live music was provided by the band “FRESH”, a local rock band (from the Fulton area I think) who Joe Hammond sporadically hired to play at The Lodge at Sandy Pond in those days. Marianne’s husband Joe Hart even sat in and played the drums. He’s a talented drummer, and played in several local bands. FRESH, especially the crazy-cool lead singer Jimmy, had some solid talent, and played a great collection of tunes… everybody liked them.

In the course of the day we threw frisbee, wrestled hogs, and ate and drank heartily. I remember there were a lot of girls there, probably drawn to the live music. I composed a long song on the spot about everybody there and the band backed me up when I sang it. In those days I played a Hummingbird 6-string guitar with a Humbucking electronic pickup clamped in the sound-hole. That guitar had the a deep clear sound I'll never forget.

I brought my trusty Kodak M30 Super 8mm movie camera with me that day a shot about 3 minutes of footage.

People appearing in this footage include Dave Akkoul (Nozzle), Pete and Mrs. Basio, Sherry Greer (Sherry Gum-reer) , Bruce Archibee (Baron), Brenda Maas, Starr Hilliker, Mary Lou La Point, Debbie Riter (Critter), Sue McKown, Sue Blount, Chrissy Lapham, Don McDougal (Dugan), Wayne Kenyon (Wicked Wayne), Barry Rowe (Wildberry), Dick Samuels (Apache), Gary Chrisman (Tongue-man), Mike Clark, GRAT, Joe Hammond, Mary Ann Bagalonis, Terry Bentley, Gary Sheldon (GARR), and Jimmie Beach. There are several others of which the years have stolen my memory.

This footage was shot only a few hours before Jim Beach and his girlfriend Frankie Arquette crashed his motorcycle into the back of Clarence Stafford’s tractor just down the road. It was dusk and Jim and Frankie were traveling at a good clip but did not see Clarence heading home on his tractor, chugging along. Tractors didn’t require running lights, only a reflective orange triangle on the rear. Jim was in the hospital for many weeks recovering from very serious injuries, while Jackie was hurt but not as seriously. They eventually got married and moved to Connecticut. Jim and his siblings still keep their parents Ken and Anne Beach's beautiful cottage on the waterfront at The Pond, it's near the old Kappesser homestead.

Chrissy Lapham was only 17 years old in this film. Chrissy was taken from us in a freak water skiing accident on Sandy Pond a few years ago. Chrissy was bright, funny, and a trustworthy friend - - we miss her…
Hope you enjoy this video of "Rat Pack Party at THE FARM".

  1. I was at this party, with my friend John Glavin. I know it was the day that Evel Knievel tried to make his Snake River Canyon jump. I just looked up the day, it was September 8,1974. I remember the dude singing his song about the Rat Pack. Wasn't his nickname Badger? I remember some of the lyrics of the song too,but I thought better of posting them. David Scott a.k.a Drewber

  2. I have been checking out the site and enjoying it (history of the beach etc),but I couldn't place who you were, even though I know Kip. I guess I never knew your real name then or that you were Kip's brother. I remember running into you eating at the Red Barn on the SU hill.... Enjoyed the footage... MARY LOU IN THE HOUSE!!!

  3. Hey Drewber - I think I vaguely rememeber you. Yeah, I rarely mentioned I was related to Kip (Snake as we used to call him). It never seemed relevant. And, Mary Lou was wonderfully crazy, wasn't she? We shared a similar sense of humor and I respected her for it...

  4. Hey Badger, Mike Moody a.k.a.(tailgunner)there's story behind that I won't go into. Jack Simonson gave me that name back in the early 70"s. I was turned onto this site by Gary Chrisman & Julie Soule this morning. It brought back alot of good old memories. If I were to go back in time I wouldn't change a thing. All of us were like a big family, just being ourselves and were excepted the way we were.
I enjoyed your site very much. Thank you for sharing it.

  5. Hey Mike, good to hear from you. Glad you and gary and Julie like the BLOG. Can't remember the last time I saw you or Gary - probably the summer of '79 before I entered the Navy. Last time I saw Julie was at my Dad's wake in 2005, but she didn't recognize me (I was too fat in those days!) I have more time to spare during the Holidays so will be posting more to this site. I am reviewing SCCS football and cheerleading video footage, as well as over 90 minutes of Rat Pack archives...

  6. Hey Badger,

David Jones told me to check the site out...glad I did. My son Travis (19) commented that it looked like we had a lot more fun then they do today! I told him they weren't trying hard enough! Good to hear all your news and go back in what is definitely the "way-back" machine!

Sue Blount AKA rather not say!

  7. Hi Sue AKA (I Forgot your AKA!)- Great hearing from you...haven't talked to you since 1979. The "Way Back Machine" is just starting to get fired up. I plan to show several Rat Pack scenes, events, parties, etc. as I develop them. Now that I have all the Rat Pack films on Blu-ray Disc, I can do them justice. Early on, while we still had our wits about us, some of us made a couple of short films with plots too. One is "The Bust", featuring Spike, Mac, Pads, & Airplane, and the star was the 1955 Volkswagen Microbus I used to drive. You know, the one I painted to look like the American Flag? Among all the girls in what we called the "Crack Pack", I think you were the brightest. You can mention to Travis that FUN requires a wanton, reckless, abandon...thoughtful and remaining aware and respectful of "The Establishment".

  9. UNBELIEVABLE!! This was my home as a child- yes little Shari here all grown up. My mom Sharon knew how to invite the crowd and keep the party going for days. Thank God we didn't have close neighbors. THE PIGS were BERT and ERNIE and sadly I remember when they were slaughtered outside the barn. Great to see the old place.
